Growing your writing/poetry practice
I wrote this for students that I had worked with at DC Bilingual on ways to practice their poetry/writing over the summer…but sometimes I write what I need to hear too :).
Reminders/Practices to try
Practice, practice, practice...use some of the writing topics below...Sometimes the best way to stay inspired is seeing your own potential!
Read, read, read!!! Seeing other writers in action always inspires.
Journal (handwrite) at least one page of your thoughts/emotions every morning! This helps clear the mind and allows you to write from the heart.
Take nature walks and spend time playing! Moving the body especially in nature helps open up new ideas.
Go see art/murals or check out some museums...the top floor of the Portrait Gallery downtown is very nice! Seeing art stimulates the creative part of our brains and what we have to say!
Try listening to classical music or music without words when you write. This kind of music settles us down and gives us courage to write!
Remember to be courageous and please don’t compare yourself to anyone. The world and all of DCB wants to hear what only YOU can say!
Here are some writing ideas/topics
You can write a poem, rhyme, short story or song about any of the following...just write what you feel!
Hopes/dreams you have
What do you want to change in our world
Why is it important to learn languages...how does this create more understanding
What poem would you write to yourself to encourage your writing
What brings you joy
A letter to family/friends about what they mean to you
What you see outside and/or unique smells
What does it mean to make someone feel welcome
What makes you laugh
Write about your favorite pet
