what it means to be overjoyed
oh the joys of summer
the sun makes us run to
the water, the trees and many ways
to stay cool
i sit in an urban park and
find two kids who seem to
have it figured all out
mini fountains of water
spit up from the courtyard
for kids this isn’t time to just
put your feet in
the two i see run and jump
in the water
putting their shirts over the water
that shoots upwards…they
truly have no care in the world
i hear their shouts and shrieks of
excitement, surprise and elation
of cooling ones jets in this
100 degree heat
i think to myself this is a picture of joy
of simplicity
as us adults
look on and smile
these kids have extended
summer for awhile
their father says to me
“oh i just had to let them go”
i think he is right
maybe this is what joy
truly is
the chance to just
let ourselves go
no care
no worry
no judgement
no future
no past
just yelling and screaming
over the joy of feeling
water for the first time
children sure remind us all
that is simple
that we could spend
less time trying to
fill that endless void
and that there is never too much
“over”
when one is
over
joyed
